Hopsewee Plantation is a well known landmark, but the tea room is a fairly new addition.
Going there for afternoon tea is a budget-friendly way to spend an elegant afternoon and have an English tea experience, with a little Southern charm.
Hopsewee Plantation is on Highway 17, about 12 miles of south of Georgetown, right before you cross the North Santee River.
Owner Raejean Beattie said the tea room is in what used to be a barn, made from recycled wood off the plantation. Beattie said she decided to convert the barn after a visit from some Red Hat Ladies who said she just had to serve tea.
The menu includes a selection of 13 English teas to compliment the afternoon tea service of savories, scones and sweets.
Beattie said since opening the tea room last fall, she's learning a lot about tea.
"Serving and drinking tea is just one of those pleasures in life I wouldn't want to do without now," she said.
Beattie said the website eBay has been her best friend when it comes to building the china collection.
The tea service also includes traditional cucumber sandwiches, an array of savories like curry chicken salad on ginger snaps, a salmon mousse, quiche and tomato tarts. And there are scones, with your choice of clotted cream, lemon curd, and jams.
The afternoon tea also includes music on a hammer dulcimer, played by Beattie.
Beattie said she wants you to feel like an extraordinary guest inside Hopsewee's tea room.
"Take what I know about Southern hospitality and turn that into an English tea experience, so I like to say we do an English tea with a Southern flair."
That Southern flair also includes some of Beatties’ special desserts.
If you want to take a tour of the plantation with your afternoon tea, you get a $5 discount.
Beattie also serves children's teas.
