Historic downtown Conway isn’t off the beaten path, but it just off the well-traveled path to and from Myrtle Beach.

In fact, while most have passed through the old river town, a relative few have stopped there for the day.

You may want to change your plans.

Betty Molnar runs the Conway Visitor’s Center. “Often times, people are surprised there’s so much here,” she said.

Things like Main Street, which includes fine restaurants, antique stores and the Horry County museum.

You’ll also find scores of huge live oaks in town, many of which have stories nearly as wide ranging as their limbs, which almost form a canopy over the Horry County seat.

Conway’s reputation as an art colony also continues to grow.

Most are working galleries and they are centered just off Main... along Norman Alley.

Artist David Piper says the artists’ goal is to establish Conway as a place to find unique pieces of art at reasonable prices. “Not just your average tourist art,” he adds.

First and foremost, however... Conway's history evolved along the river.

You can fish, rent kayaks, take a 90-minute boat tour (a great deal for ten dollars!), or just stroll along the River Walk.

Molnar says she has a great job, informing people of a hidden gem just off the main drag to the beach.

“I've never had a negative comment,” she said. “This is exactly what they're looking for."
