In one of their biggest wins of the year, the Johnsonville Flashes nearly eclipsed 100 points as they defeated Creek Bridge 96-60.
The Flashes, who will play Carvers Bay Friday night for the lead in Class A, Region 8-A, helped their cause greatly as they maintain their half game lead over the Bears.
Through the first few minutes, the Creek Bridge Warriors looked as though they might be able to take the up-tempo pace the Flashes employ.
With a few forced turnovers and converted baskets, the Flashes quickly pulled ahead and never looked back.
Scoring at a brisk pace, the Flashes broke the 90 point mark for the second game in a row and for the third time this season. While only holding a four point lead at the end of the first quarter, Johnsonville went outscore Creek Bridge 79-47 through the final three quarters.
Johnsonville head coach Harris Avant said his team recognized the importance of playing at a consistent level through all four quarters of the game.
“We just kept pressing on,” Avant said. “The game’s not decided in the first two, three or four minutes of the ball game… We wanted to stick with a game plan, which was a full-court game and we did…”
The Flashes full-court game was in full-effect, forcing numerous turnovers, leading to easy buckets on the other end.
Perhaps more importantly, though, Johnsonville’s pressure never allowed Creek Bridge to find a rhythm offensively, while fighting the speed and attrition of the press the entire game.
“We wanted to use all 11 guys and try to tire them out and it worked,” he said. “(Creek Bridge) had a tremendous amount of heart and they kept fighting hard up to the end. Our guys are seeing a bigger picture right now, though.”
The win sets the Flashes up nicely for a playoff birth, but equally essential, it gives them a great deal of momentum heading into the end of the season.
The offensive output should prove especially encouraging to Johnsonville as the team’s ability to score in the transition has proved very effective over the past two games.
“If we can keep our transition game going, the better off we are,” Avant said. “That’s more of our offensive. Tonight, we stayed in it. We didn’t settle into the half-court offense very much tonight.”
