Hennecy no longer Mullins head football coach

When the Mullins Auctioneers football team hits the field this summer, they will be led by their sixth coach in seven seasons.

Brian Hennecy, who served 18 years on the Aucs’ coaching staff, will not be returning after coaching the team nearly two seasons.

“I was informed by the principal and athletic director that I would not be returning as head coach,” Hennecy said.

Hennecy intends to finish his teaching duties as a physical education and driver’s education instructor but wouldn’t comment on returning as a member of the coaching staff in another capacity.

Marion County Board of Education chairwoman Cynthia H. Legette said after a review, the board made an administrative decision to not renew Hennecy’s football coaching contract and seek another candidate to lead the program.

Legette said the board will soon advertise the position and hire another coach with input from Marion School District 2 Board of Trustees.

Hennecy took over as the Aucs’ interim coach the second week of the 2010 season. The team finished with an 8-3 record and made the playoffs.

After having the interim label removed prior to last season, Hennecy led the Aucs to a 7-6 record and the Class 2A Division II lower state semifinals.
