After going 15 years without losing to the Flashes, the Hemingway Tigers evened the season series with Johnsonville as they won 63-58 to bring them closer to the Flashes and Carvers Bay in the race to win region 8A.
While the Flashes have been a team on the rise this season, Hemingway has taken a yeoman approach to this season, quietly putting together what now has the potential to be a memorable season.
The Friday, Jan. 20 contest was one indicative of the season, as both teams grappled with the lead throughout the game, with Hemingway ultimately hitting key free-throws and coming up with a number of turnovers late in the fourth quarter.
According to Hemingway head coach Barry McFadden, the Tigers managed to pick up the defensive pressure late in the game, thanks to a great effort by forward Jabril Soloman and point guard D’armond Player.
“I thought Jabril did a great job with about six blocks,” McFadden said. “He just got them out of the air and kept the defense alive and got a couple of steals in the end. I think that all in all, Jabril Soloman and D’armond Player played a great game tonight.”
While the Flashes were in control for the first half and much of the third quarter, the Tigers began to nick away at the Johnsonville lead.
McFadden said the Tigers began to substitute more and thusly, the Tigers fresh players were able to put more pressure on the Flashes.
“I think what happened was, we kind of wore them down,” he said. “We kept putting in the substitutions and they got worn out. They took jump shots, instead of driving the ball to the basket like they did in the first half. Our guys did a good job of contesting shots and making sure we took high percentage shots to win the game.”
