The Hartsville Red Foxes weren’t looking ahead to Saturday’s anticipated matchup with Darlington.
Jaylen Shaw scored 21 points and Dovontea Washington scored 20 as the Red Foxes defeated Marlboro County 65-55 on Tuesday night.
“I feared all day about our focus,” Hartsville coach Aric Samuel said. “But we were in control for the most part and our guys gave a good effort.”
The win sets up a showdown between the two county rivals at 2 p.m. Saturday in Hartsville. Both teams enter the game with 4-0 marks in Region 6-3A.
It will be the second matchup between the two schools. Darlington defeated Hartsville 81-78 in overtime Dec. 28 in a non-region matchup at the Pepsi Carolina Classic.
“I’m real excited about Saturday,” Samuel said. “It’s what everybody wants, and our guys will be up for it. It’s going to be a good challenge.
“We have been playing good basketball since we lost to them so hopefully we can come out and do what we need to do.”
His players are eager for the rematch with the Falcons.
“We have talked about it a lot been practicing hard and getting ready. Now we just got to go out and do it,” Shaw said.
Against the Bulldogs, Hartsville (13-4, 4-0) led 21-17 after the first quarter and used a 7-0 run in the second to lead 36-25 at halftime. Shaw had 15 of his 21 points in the first half and hit four 3-pointers.
The Red Foxes increased the lead to 13 points in the third before Marlboro made a run in the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs cut it to 57-48 before Washington and Tevin Prescott connected on back-to-back baskets with five minutes left to make it 61-48.
Malik Ford led Marlboro with 17 points, and Michael McManus added 12.
Marlboro hosts Camden on Friday.

Marlboro County 55, Hartsville 40
Rasheda Patterson scored 19 points and hit five 3-pointers as the Bulldogs defeated the Red Foxes.
Senior Nikkei Blackburn added 12 points and pulled down a game-high 20 rebounds for the Bulldogs, who improved to 11-4 and 3-1 in the region.
Marlboro, which led 28-15 at halftime, held the Red Foxes scoreless for the first five minutes of the third quarter and led 41-24 after three.
Asia Pooler led Hartsville with eight points.
