Creek Bridge Warriors point guard Vic Williams scored a game-high 26 points in a slim 46-45 loss to Hemingway Tuesday night. Down 10-points late in the fourth quarter, the Warriors were unable to get off a clean shot in the final possession of the game.
“We executed our game plan pretty well for the most part,” Creek Bridge coach Paul Hudacko said. “We just made one less play than Hemingway.”
“That group did a great job of keeping us in the game in the first quarter and would have had the lead if they just made a couple of their layups,” Hudacko said.
Williams and starting shooting guard Jimel Williams were held out for much of the first quarter for disciplinary reasons but the Creek Bridge reserves held the Tigers to a 10-7 advantage.
The Tigers began to pull away towards halftime, taking a 27-17 lead at the break.
Creek Bridge managed to rally in the third period. Williams tied the score 33-33 with a floater at the 1:28 mark in the third quarter.
Hemingway held a commanding 43-37 advantage with under five minutes to play.
A deep jumper from Hemingway guard Dominique Pyatt held off a late fourth quarter push from the Warriors, however, Stanley Graves answered with a putback to trim the lead to 44-43 with under two minutes remaining. A dish from Jimel Williams to Chris Crawford gave Creek Bridge its first lead with 54 seconds left to play.
Down 45-44, Hemingway captain Azrial Moye nailed the go-ahead shot with 26 seconds remaining and the Tigers defense contested the final shot attempt from Warriors’ top scorer.
“We had a chance to win the game twice in the last twenty seconds, with the ball in our best player's hands,” Hudacko said. “As a coach, that's all I can hope for, we just didn't make the play.”
Moye led Hemingway (4-5, 1-2) with 11 points, followed by J.D. Williams with 8.
Creek Bridge will host Green Sea Floyds on Friday.
Hemingway travels to Carvers Bay on Friday.
