Lynn Fleming is headed back to the upstate.
After four seasons as South Florence football coach, Fleming is taking the football job at Chesnee. His hiring was approved by a vote of 10-0 at a Chesnee school board meeting on Tuesday.
Fleming met with his South players this morning and will meet with his new team this afternoon before a meet-and-greet at halftime of the Chesnee boys basketball playoff game.
Fleming will officially take over as coach July 1.
"We are extremely pleased to have coach Fleming and his family joining our family at Chesnee High School," Chesnee athletic director Bill Owens said in a release Wednesday morning. "He has a proven track record of developing a total football program from the ground up and will do a great job leading every aspect of our football program.”
Calls and text messages to Fleming on Monday and Tuesday were not returned.
Fleming, who went 25-24 in four years at South, turned the Bruins’ football program into a contender in Region 6-4A after years of struggles. South Florence advanced to the second round of the playoffs each of the last two years, something that had never been done before in school history.
South Florence went 8-5 last season before losing to North Augusta in the second round.
In 2010, South Florence tied a school record for wins in a season with nine and hosted a playoff game for the first time in 18 seasons. Fleming also was named Class 4A lower state coach of the Year by the S.C. Football Coaches Association.
Fleming also went 9-4 combined against West Florence and Wilson during his tenure.
Before coming to South Florence, Fleming spent four seasons at West Oak High School.
Fleming takes over for Brentt Bridges, who stepped down in December. Chesnee went 4-8 this season but advanced to the Class 2A Division II upper state semifinals.
Chesnee went 32-16 from 2007-2010.
Fleming’s departure leaves two of the three Florence public schools without football coaches. Wilson’s Darryl Page resigned on Feb. 6. In all, there are six football coaching vacancies in the Pee Dee.
