It took a couple of games, but Coker College softball coach David Hanna reached a milestone on Friday.
The Cobras shut out Mars Hill 9-0 in the second game of a doubleheader to hand Hanna his 700 th career victory. All of them have come at Coker, where Hanna is entering his 21 st season as the program’s coach.
Mars Hill won the first game 8-4.
The Cobras dispensed of Mars Hill quickly in the second game, a run-ruled affair that lasted five innings.
Coker went up 9-0 in the fourth inning when former Darlington standout Stacy Burr hit a grand slam.
Freshman Katie Lee (1-0) earned her first career victory, giving up just three hits and striking out three in five innings.
Burr had a pair of hits in the second game and also scored a run. Junior Jaclin Poole had two hits and an RBI, while freshman Katellyn Szupello had an RBI double. Sydney Weatherford also drove in a run for the Cobras.
The Lions jumped out to an early lead in the first game, going up 4-0 in the top of the first.
Trailing 4-1, Burr trimmed the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth when she hit a two-run home run.
But Mars Hill answered in the top of the fifth on Taylor Morris’ three-run home run.
Coker’s Jordan Atkinson took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts in four innings.
Morris got the complete-game win, scattering seven hits and striking out nine with one walk.
