DARLINGTON, SC – The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will not return to Darlington Raceway for the 2012 season.
Track president Chris Browning said it was Darlington’s decision to not have the race. Browning acknowledged that Darlington Raceway and NASCAR could not find a date to work for both parties.
“We talked about several different options,” Browning said. “They have the big picture to look after for their scheduling. We have a little bit smaller picture.”
Darlington Raceway’s ideal weekend for a truck race would be in late September or early October.
“It’s better from a weather standpoint and the kids would be back in school,” Browning said. And that part of the schedule going down to the wire would be a good set-up for us. In a perfect world, that’s where we would be.”
Browning said he discussed having the truck race the same weekend as the Nationwide and Sprint Cup weekend but decided not to because a triple-header would push that race to Thursday—which is not ideal for attendance.
Browning isn’t closing the door on bringing the truck race back the following season.
“The future you never know,” Browning said. “We really like the truck series, they put on a great show. Hopefully we can work something out in 2013 and fit it in the schedule where its optimum for us and for NASCAR.”
