American Red Cross Lifeguard Classes

The Myrtle Beach Aquatics Division will conduct American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification classes at Pepper Geddings Recreation Center during the months of February, March, April and May. Get certified now and be ready for the summer. Pre-registration is strongly recommended, as space is limited. A $20 non-refundable deposit is due at the time of registration. This deposit will be applied to course fees upon successful completion of the Pre-Course Session. The course fee is $150 for City Residents or $250 for Non-City Residents and includes certification (if all material is completed satisfactorily), a pocket mask and a whistle. Camp Friendship 2012 is a summer day camp offered at Pepper Geddings Recreation Center. The lottery method will be used to fill spots for summer camp. Print the completed registration form and return it to Pepper Geddings during registration hours (8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 6). Drawing for spaces will be held at 2:00 p.m., February 6, with results posted on the bulletin board outside the junior gym after 3:00 p.m. Registration Fees: $20 City Resident / $50 Non City Resident. Pepper Geddings Recreation Center features a well equipped weight room with free weights and machines; a cardio room with treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, stair climbers and more; an indoor track; a 25 meter pool with six lanes and diving boards; a shallow pool; and two gymnasiums equipped with eight basketball goals, pickleball and volleyball equipment, and a number of other functions.
The following classes and activities are offered at Pepper Geddings. Pre-registration is required, and we reserve the right to cancel any class that does not meet minimum enrollment. The center is open from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday; from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday; and from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday.
ADULT AND SENIOR FITNESS CLASSES (January 10 - March 25, 2012)
All of the classes listed here are included in the “Choose Health and Fitness” programs, with no additional class registration required. Non-Choose members may attend these classes through March 24. Cardio & Strength – This is a total body workout focusing on strength, with mini-cardio burst in the mix. This class utilizes a variety of equipment to keep participants motivated and having fun!

Wear loose, comfortable clothing, comfortable sneakers and your smile! Enhance Fitness is recommended for Seniors.

Aqua Surge – A non-stop, intense, interval style class which focuses on strength, core stability and cardio. It is designed to challenge everyone, from the seasoned water exerciser, weekend warrior, cross-training athlete or the fitness challenged. Come expecting to have fun, work hard and maybe even get your hair wet. Water shoes strongly recommended, but not mandatory.

Cardio Circuit – This is a fast-paced workout to strengthen and tone all major muscle groups. The class uses the principles of circuit and interval training to get the most out of an intense 30 minute workout.

HydroAerobics – It’s the perfect blend of water and workout. HydroAerobics is a low impact, fast-paced aerobic program that improves heart-lung capacity, flexibility and muscular strength. Class is in the shallow end of the pool, so no swimming skills are necessary. Come early and get your wristband, because only 25 spots are available.
5:30 - 6:15 p.m. – Monday, Wednesday and Friday
Kickboxing – This is a fast, fun and stress-relieving workout for your mind and whole body! Kickboxing bags are used to add resistance and excitement to your variety of kicks, punches and combinations. Please bring gloves!

Beginner Pickleball – Try this fun game that is played on a badminton court with a tennis net. You’ll use a perforated, plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. Come give it a try!

Zumba Toning – It takes the dance-fitness class to the next level. Toning blends body sculpting techniques, using light-weight toning sticks, and Latin-inspired ZUMBA moves into a calorie-burning, strength training class.

Deep Water Exercise – Try this deep water, high intensity, non-impact aerobic exercise class. The water adds excellent resistance to help build muscular strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Class members wear buoyancy belts for added floatation and should be comfortable in deep water.

Intro to Weights – Learn how to work out on your own with the help of a trained personal instructor. Take the opportunity to create your own routine with proven advice that fits your needs. Learn how to use our exercise equipment and how to perform exercises, as well as how much, how often and more. Instruction is available during the scheduled time and distributed to the number of participants in each class. Priority is given to first and second time class attendees. Once a routine is administered, attendees may work out independently.

Bosu – “Both Sides Utilized” or BOSU training is about expanding movement capabilities, while reshaping the body and strengthening the mind. It’s a fantastic way to improve core strength and tone your abdominal and back muscles. This class is fun, fast, and effective.

Registration for Fall After-School Sports and Fitness Classes: Stop by the front desk of Pepper Geddings Recreation Center to register your child for our after-school sports and fitness classes.
Start Smart Sports: This is a proven instructional program that prepares children, ages three to six, for the world of organized sports without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Children work on learning all the fundamentals of sport, including catching, passing, kicking and running, in a fun atmosphere. Start Smart activities are held once a week for six weeks. The exercises become increasingly more difficult as class progresses and children show improvement. Classes meet from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. for six weeks. Fees: $25 City Resident / $42 Non-City Resident. Pre-registration is required.

Karate: (Ages five and older) Tae Kwon Do is a martial art that uses both the hands and feet. It is a sport that physically benefits the whole body. Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Classes are ongoing, with fees due at the start of each month. New members are always welcome. Pre-School Swim Classes
Age: 3 - 5 years
Pre-School 1 - This class is for children with minimal or no water experience. It is for non-swimming children who are not yet comfortable putting their face in the water.
Pre-School 2 - This class is for children who are comfortable in the water, can put their face in, but are not yet swimming or floating (front and back) on their own.
Pre-School 3 - This class is for children who are very comfortable in the water, can front and back float for at least 5 seconds with NO assistance, and are swimming on their own with NO assistance or floatation device.
Youth Swim Classes
Age: 5-12 years
Level 1 – This class is for children with minimal or no water experience. Non-swimming children who are not yet comfortable with their face in the water belong in this class.
Level 2 – This class is for children with some water experience who are comfortable putting their faces in the water, but are not yet swimming on their own.
Level 3 – This class is for children who can swim and float unassisted on both the front and back, but are just beginning to work on strokes.
Level 4 – This class is for children who can swim front and back crawl for 15 yards and tread water for at least 30 seconds.
Level 5 – This class is for children who can swim 25 yards of front and back crawl, as well as 15 yards of breaststroke and elementary backstroke.
Aquatic Exercise Classes
Adult Swim Clinic/Workout: Have it your way! On deck coaching to provide you with what you need. One hour of stroke instruction utilizing drills combined with a challenging workout geared to your level of ability. Perfect your strokes, increase your strength and endurance, and enjoy a fun group workout. Free with admission to the center. Meet on deck at “Pepper” Geddings Recreation Center Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30-8:30 p.m.
Hydroaerobics: The perfect blend of water and workout! This is a low impact, fast paced aerobic program designed to improve heart-lung capacity, flexibility and muscular strength. The class is held in the shallow end of the pool, so no swimming skills are needed. Class meets from 9:00 – 9:45 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Off The Deep End: This class moves the workout to deep water. This is a high intensity, non-impact aerobic exercise class. This program is an excellent cross training and rehabilitative opportunity. The water workout helps build muscular strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Class members wear buoyancy vests for added floatation. Participants should be comfortable in deep water. Class meets on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 – 9:45 a.m. or 7:00 – 7:45 p.m. Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents, $8 for non-city residents or get an 18 visit punch card for $45 for city residents or $75 for non-city residents.

Then you should to come to the Base Recreation Center! The Senior Social Networking class offers instruction tailored to a senior population. Dynasty League Football – Dynasty League Football is a Madden 2012 video game football league. Registration is open. A.M. Fitness Program: The ultimate workout and conditioning program for young men and women with disabilities and special needs. This program will give participants the opportunity to learn new skills, interact with others and have fun. Class Descriptions
Infant/Toddler and Pre-school
Infant/Toddler - Developed for children 6 months to 3 years of age: American Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water. Parents and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and more. **Special Requirements: An adult must accompany the child in the water, and swim diapers are required for those children who are not potty-trained.
Pre-School 1 - This class is for children with minimal or no water experience. It is for non-swimming children who are not yet comfortable putting their face in the water.
Pre-School 2 - This class is for children who are comfortable in the water, can put their face in, but are not yet swimming or floating (front and back) on their own.
Pre-School 3 - This class is for children who are very comfortable in the water, can front and back float for at least 5 seconds with NO assistance, and are swimming on their own with NO assistance or floatation device.
Youth Swim Classes
Level 2 – This class is for children with some water experience who are comfortable putting their faces in the water, but are not yet swimming on their own.
Level 3 – This class is for children who can swim and float unassisted on both the front and back, but are just beginning to work on strokes.
Level 4 – This class is for children who can swim front and back crawl for 15 yards and tread water for at least 30 seconds.
Level 5 – This class is for children who can swim 25 yards of front and back crawl, as well as 15 yards of breaststroke and elementary backstroke.
Aquatic Exercise Classes
Aqua Surge: A non-stop, intense, interval style class which focuses on strength, core stability and cardio. It is designed to challenge everyone, from the seasoned water exerciser, weekend warrior, cross-training athlete or the fitness challenged. Come expecting to have fun, work hard, and maybe even get your hair wet. Water shoes strongly recommended, but not required. Class meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12:00 – 12:45 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 – 6:15 p.m. Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents, $8 for non-city residents or get an 18 visit punch card for $45 for city residents or $75 for non-city residents.
Jivin’ Joints: A water exercise class designed for individuals with a form of arthritis or related condition. Jivin’ Joints offers gentle range of motion and endurance activities under the guidance of an Arthritis Foundation trained instructor. This class is suitable for “pre-hab:” or “re-hab” of hips and knees. This class focuses on functional skills, core stability and balance. Class meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 – 10:45 a.m. Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents, $8 for non-city residents or get an 18 visit punch card for $45 for city residents or $75 for non-city residents.
Adult Swim Clinic/Workout: Have it your way! On deck coaching to provide you with what you need. One hour of stroke instruction utilizing drills combined with a challenging workout geared to your level of ability. Perfect your strokes, increase your strength and endurance, and enjoy a fun group workout. Free with admission to the center. Meet on deck at Canal Street Recreation Center Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12:00 to 1:00p.m.

Join the Team! The Myrtle Beach Marlins and Myrtle Beach Hurricanes are a year-round recreational swim teams. The Marlins swim at Pepper Geddings Recreation Center, while the Hurricanes swim at Canal Street Recreation Center. Both compete in the Grand Strand Recreational Swim League (GSSL), comprised of six teams from the greater Grand Strand area.
Our swim teams focus on the fundamentals of swimming and training and, most of all, having fun! Swimmers work hard and build relationships that will last them a lifetime, while learning skills that will help them throughout their lives. Bosu Boot Camp: Want to get energized and take your exercise to the next level? Bosu Boot Camp is the class for you. This action packed class is a fun and challenging way to work your core strength, cardio and muscle endurance; using resistance bands, medicine balls, stability balls, and of course, the bosu. Here we will incorporate a functional aspect to fitness with hard work ethics.
