CONWAY, SC – Coastal Carolina is handed back-to-back home losses for the first time since the 2008-2009 season. High Point made 11-of-22 three point shots and got 24 points from Shay Shine on way to a 70-65 victory on Thursday night at Kimbel Arena.
“I really wanted to come out the first five minutes and impose our will on them,” veteran coach Cliff Ellis said. “Instead they imposed their will on us. The three point shot beat us tonight, there is no question about that.”
High Point led 33-25 at the half and extended that lead to 11-points with 14:04 to go. Coastal proceeded to go on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 53-52. The Panthers answered that run with an 8-0 run to create breathing room.
“We beat ourselves tonight,” guard Kierre Greenwood said. “We let them get off to a good start. They were feeling it. When you are playing a team like that you can’t let them catch rhythm early.”
High Point’s Corey Law posted a double-double with 11-points and 11-rebounds.
Coastal Carolina (17-7, 10-4) saw a zone defense for the second straight game. On Thursday, the Chanticleers settled for 26 three-point shots, converting on only seven of them.
Kierre Greenwood led the team with 18-points. Chris Gradnigo added 15 points in 34 minutes off the bench.
Junior guard Danny Nieman left the game with a hip injury. Coach Cliff Ellis said with the nature of the injury it would be doubtful his starting guard would be ready for Winthrop on Saturday.
