The City of Myrtle Beach welcomes the 2011 USA Track & Field Championships this summer. This event will draw as many as 6,000 athletes from all over the United States for six days of competition. During the first two days, the best 16 and 17 year-old boys and girls will compete for a chance to compete on the 2011 USA World Youth Team. If selected, these young folks will leave immediately following the event to compete in Lille, France. In all, more than 2,000 medals will be awarded during the six day event, and the Championship Village will promote sportsmanship and camaraderie, along with Myrtle Beach and South Carolina. This event is open to the public and tickets can be purchased at the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium box office. Tickets start at $8.00 for daily admission. More than 3,000 young people, ages seven to 18, will participate. Ideally, presenters and announcers will volunteer their time in two-hour blocks. Class Descriptions:
Infant/Toddler and Pre-school
Infant/Toddler - Developed for children 6 months to 3 years of age: American Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water. Parents and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and more.
**Special Requirements: An adult must accompany the child in the water, and swim diapers are required for those children who are not potty-trained.
Pre-School 1 - This class is for children with minimal or no water experience. It is for non-swimming children who are not yet comfortable putting their face in the water.
Pre-School 2 - This class is for children who are comfortable in the water, can put their face in, but are not yet swimming or floating (front and back) on their own.
Pre-School 3 - This class is for children who are very comfortable in the water, can front and back float for at least 5 seconds with NO assistance, and are swimming on their own with NO assistance or floatation device.
Youth Swim Classes
Level 2 – This class is for children with some water experience who are comfortable putting their faces in the water, but are not yet swimming on their own.
Level 3 – This class is for children who can swim and float unassisted on both the front and back, but are just beginning to work on strokes.
Level 4 – This class is for children who can swim front and back crawl for 15 yards and tread water for at least 30 seconds.
Level 5 – This class is for children who can swim 25 yards of front and back crawl, as well as 15 yards of breaststroke and elementary backstroke.
Adult Swim Classes… All Skill Levels Welcome!
Adult Swim Stroke and Drill Clinic: If you enjoy swimming and would like to improve your stroke and technique this is the class for you. This is a great class for swimmers who have been out of the water for awhile and need to work on their strokes. Class is held Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Purchase a wrist band at the front desk and come join in!
Masters Swimming with Grand Strand Masters: United States Masters Swimming (USMS) is a national organization that provides workouts, competitions, clinics and workshops for adults aged 18 and over. Programs are open to all adult swimmers (fitness, tri-athlete, competitive, non-competitive) who are dedicated to improving their fitness through swimming. Participation in meets is encouraged, but not required. Join the group for fitness, stroke development, motivation, competition and fun! This class is ongoing, come out and join us from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday. Purchase a wristband at the front desk and come out on deck. United States Masters Swimming membership is required to provide liability insurance. USMS fees are $35 per year and payable at http://www.usms.org/reg/.
Aquatic Golf Enhancement: An exciting new program for golfers. Use the water to increase your core strength, balance and flexibility. The water will help you relax your swing while maintaining a solid foundation. Water shoes are required for good stability. An old golf club is helpful, but not required. Purchase a wristband and join Steve, former varsity golfer, in the water. Class meets Monday and Wednesday from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Aqua Surge: A non-stop, intense, interval style class which focuses on strength, core stability and cardio. It is designed to challenge everyone, from the seasoned water exerciser, weekend warrior, cross-training athlete or the fitness challenged. Come expecting to have fun, work hard, and maybe even get your hair wet. Water shoes strongly recommended, but not required. Class meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12:00 – 12:45 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 – 6:15 p.m. Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents, $8 for non-city residents or get an 18 visit punch card for $45 for city residents or $75 for non-city residents.
Jivin’ Joints: A water exercise class designed for individuals with a form of arthritis or related condition. Jivin’ Joints offers gentle range of motion and endurance activities under the guidance of an Arthritis Foundation trained instructor. This class is suitable for “pre-hab:” or “re-hab” of hips and knees. This class focuses on functional skills, core stability and balance. Pepper Geddings Recreation Center is open from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday; from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday; and from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday.
The Center features a well equipped weight room with free weights and machines; a cardio room with treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, stair climbers and more; an indoor track; a 25 meter pool with six lanes and diving boards; a shallow pool; and two gymnasiums equipped with eight basketball goals, pickleball and volleyball equipment, and a number of other functions.
The following classes and activities are offered at Pepper Geddings Recreation Center. Pre-registration is required, and we reserve the right to cancel any class that does not meet minimum enrollment.

Registration for After-School Sports and Fitness Classes: Stop by the front desk of Pepper Geddings Recreation Center to register your child for our after-school sports and fitness classes.
Start Smart Sports: This is a proven instructional program that prepares children, ages three to six, for the world of organized sports without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Children work on learning all the fundamentals of sport including catching, passing, kicking and running in a fun atmosphere. Start Smart activities are held once a week for six weeks. Each week the exercises become increasingly more difficult as the class progresses and children show improvement. Classes meet from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. for six weeks. Fees: $25 City Resident / $42 Non-City Resident. Pre-registration is required.

Karate: (Ages 5 & Over) Tae Kwon Do is a martial art that uses both the hands and feet. It is a sport that physically benefits the whole body. One can develop flexibility, stamina, motor skills, strength, energy, self-confidence and balance. Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Classes are ongoing, with fees due at the start of each month. New members are always welcome. Birthday Parties at Pepper Geddings: Calling all kids! Sign up to have your birthday party at the “Rec”. Choose from swimming or gym games with a party room. Summer Sports & Fitness Camps:
Choose from any number of Nine Week Camps throughout the summer. Camps are held Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 2:30. p.m. (Special Days, Times, Capacity and Fees for Beach Camp) Fees: $50 City Resident / $85 Non-City Resident. Camps are open to the first 60 participants. Campers are responsible for bringing their own lunch. Early drop-off and late pick-up are available at no additional fee. All campers must be picked up no later than 5:30 p.m. Fitness and a healthy lifestyle will be emphasized throughout the week.

Beach Camp: (Grades 5 – 6) Spend 2 mornings from 9-noon at a local beach just a few blocks from Pepper Geddings enjoying fun beach recreational activities under the safe supervision of experienced lifeguards and camp counselors. Spend 2 more days from 9-4 on day trips to Myrtle Beach State Park and Huntington Beach State Park to meet with state naturalists participating in activities such as crabbing, marsh seining, beachcombing, and much more. Camp limited to 25 participants. Transportation required for drop-off and pick-up at specified local beach access. Buses will be utilized to/from Pepper Geddings for day trips to both State Parks. No early drop-off or late pick-up activities scheduled this week. $60 City/$100 Non-City

Soccer Camp: (Grades 3 – 5) Improve your personal skills, learn the basics of ball handling and team play. Drills and game situations will be used to emphasize both individual improvement and teamwork. This camp will meet indoors and outdoors, as appropriate to best teach the skills of the sport.

Volleyball Camp: (Grades 3 – 5) Learn the basics of volleyball or increase your abilities. This camp will teach all the fundamentals of serving, passing, setting, blocking, and spiking. These skills will advance your game for beach play or making the school team.

Lacrosse Camp: (Grades 2 – 9) You’ve got to get in on the fastest game on the beach. Whether you’ve played for years, months or never before, this camp will help you learn and improve your basic skills for playing the game. Groundballs, cradling, passing and shooting will be emphasized. No equipment? No worries! If you have it, wear it, but if not we will provide at least a stick and drills that are safe and fun.

Basketball Camp: (Grades 3 – 5) This camp is packed with competition and drills to boost your skills. All players will learn to apply their own abilities through individual and group instruction. Participants will work in skill-appropriate groups to maximize the effectiveness and fun throughout the week. Summer is a great time to continue developing your talents and improve fundamentals of the game necessary to take your game to the next level.

All Sports Camp: (Grades 2 – 5) This camp will introduce campers to basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball & lacrosse skills as well as increase their understanding of these games. Fun and fitness will be emphasized along with the fundamentals of speed, coordination, agility and strength. Skills will be taught in a non-threatening environment and age appropriate equipment will be used to minimize fear and optimize success. This camp will meet indoors and outdoors, as appropriate to best teach the skills of the sport.
August 8 - 12
Triathlon Camp: (Grades 2 – 9) This camp will focus on the three disciplines that make up a triathlon: Swimming-Biking-Running. Each day Monday through Thursday, will consist of training in the pool, biking the block around Pepper Geddings, and running throughout the complex. The camp will conclude with Race Day Friday.
* Kids ages 7-10 will swim 100 yards, bike 5k and run 1k

Fitness Over 50: A fun and active workout geared just for our over 50 folks. Upbeat music, moderate impact activity and a group of folk from age 50 – 90 are the perfect combination for fun! Fitness Punch Card: Our punch card is now available for all classes in the following list. The punch card is a great way to try different classes and mix up your workout routine. The card contains 24 punches, and the cost is $30 for City Residents and $50 for Non-City Residents.
Zumba: Join the party! It’s fun, different, easy and effective. Zumba is a Latin inspired dance fitness class. Tone and sculpt your body while dancing in a healthy party like atmosphere.

Class Descriptions:
Pre-School Swim Classes
Age: 3 - 5 years
Pre-School 1 - This class is for children with minimal or no water experience. It is for non-swimming children who are not yet comfortable putting their face in the water.
Pre-School 2 - This class is for children who are comfortable in the water, can put their face in, but are not yet swimming or floating (front and back) on their own.
Pre-School 3 - This class is for children who are very comfortable in the water, can front and back float for at least 5 seconds with NO assistance, and are swimming on their own with NO assistance or floatation device.
Youth Swim Classes
Age: 5-12 years
Level 1 – This class is for children with minimal or no water experience. Non-swimming children who are not yet comfortable with their face in the water belong in this class.
Level 2 – This class is for children with some water experience who are comfortable putting their faces in the water, but are not yet swimming on their own.
Level 3 – This class is for children who can swim and float unassisted on both the front and back, but are just beginning to work on strokes.
Level 4 – This class is for children who can swim front and back crawl for 15 yards and tread water for at least 30 seconds.
Level 5 – This class is for children who can swim 25 yards of front and back crawl, as well as 15 yards of breaststroke and elementary backstroke.
Adult Swim Lessons: Overcome your fears and gain comfort and skill in the water. Whatever the reason, there is no time like the present to get in the water. Enjoy the fitness and leisure opportunities that swimming has to offer. Classes are offered throughout the year on Tuesday and Thursday. Check the front desk for start times and dates. Fees: $35 for City Residents and $58 for Non-City Residents for eight lessons.
Adult Swim Clinic and Workout: Do you enjoy lap swimming but need to improve your strokes a bit? This is the place for you! Your coach will use drills, stroke correction and workouts to help you get the most out of your lap swim time. Purchase a wristband and come out on deck.

Masters Swimming with Grand Strand Masters: United States Masters Swimming (USMS) is a national organization that provides organized workouts, competitions, clinics and workshops for adults aged 18 and over. Programs are open to all adult swimmers (fitness, tri-athlete, competitive, non-competitive) who are dedicated to improving their fitness through swimming. Participation in meets is encouraged, but not required. Join the group for fitness, stroke development, motivation, competition and fun! Masters practice Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Purchase a wristband at the front desk and come out on deck. United States Masters Swimming membership is required to provide liability insurance. USMS fees are $35 per year payable at http://www.usms.org/reg/.
Hydroaerobics: The perfect blend of water and workout! This is a low impact, fast paced aerobic program designed to improve heart-lung capacity, flexibility and muscular strength. The class is held in the shallow end of the pool, so no swimming skills are needed. Class meets from 9:00 – 9:45 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 5:30 – 6:15 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents, $8 for non-city residents or get a punch card for $45 for city residents or $75 for non-city residents.
Off The Deep End: This class moves the workout to deep water. This is a high intensity, non-impact aerobic exercise class. This program is an excellent cross training and rehabilitative opportunity. The water workout helps build muscular strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Class members wear buoyancy vests for added floatation. Participants should be comfortable in deep water. Class meets on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 – 9:45 a.m. Fees: Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents, $8 for non-city residents or get an 18 visit punch card for $45 for city residents or $75 for non-city residents.
Aqua Jog: 30 minutes of pure cardio. Come and join us as we make a splash with this new class. This is geared for those who are recovering from an injury, losing weight or toning. Whatever your goal, we’ll provide the class to help you succeed. Class meets Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents, $8 for non-city residents or get an 18 visit punch card for $45 for city residents or $75 for non-city residents.

Drinks and chips will be provided, but each participant is asked to bring $5 worth of food to share.
