HARTSVILLE — Junior Amber Lau racked up 37 points for Coker in its 71-68 win Tuesday over Queens in women’s college basketball.
The first half started quick for Coker, which led 12-4, but the Royals were able to hold the Cobras to just 29 points in the first half, taking a 38-29 lead into halftime.
Coker’s offense found its groove in the second, as the Cobras outscored the Royals 42-30. Lau scored 23 of her 37 in the second half.
Three different Cobras dished out four assists a piece, including, senior Jasmine Alston, freshman Heidrun Kristmundsdottir and freshman Hailey Yohn. Junior Jessica Cohen was the leading rebounder with nine.
Coker’s record improved to 10-6 in conference play. The win clinched the #3 seed in the East Division for the Cobras, who have one regular-season game left Friday at Pfeiffer. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
The Cobras will travel to North Greenville University on Monday for the opening round of the Conference Carolinas tournament.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Coker 78, Queens 67
HARTSVILLE — Coker moved into sole possession of fourth place in the Conference Carolinas East Division with its win over the first-place Royals.
the top four teams from each division advance to the conference tournament. Coker has one regular-season game remaining, Friday at Pfeiffer.
The Cobras opened the game with an 8-4 run, but quickly found themselves in a 20-15 hole. Refusing to back down, the Cobras battled back to take a 39-31 lead into halftime.
Coker kept the momentum going in the second by opening the half with a monster alley-oop dunk by Sharod Williams from Bryce Arnott. Coker never lost the lead.
Williams finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Julian Nelson scored 16 and Austin Harper had14 and eight rebounds. Charles West added 11 points.
The game at Pfeiffer is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
BASEBALL
Coker 9, Claflin 1
HARTSVILLE — Frank Suarez drove in three runs to help Coker beat in nonconference college baseball.
The Cobras used a pair of three-run innings and another got another solid pitching performance from Andrew Goot.
Goot (2-2) earned his second straight mid-week win, tossing seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits with six strikeouts.
Suarez finished the game 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored, while Lucas Britt was 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Keith Wolf was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Chad Nader had a pair of hits with an RBI and a run scored.
The Cobras will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Limestone for a three-game series.
