Marlboro County coach Dean Boyd says he is disappointed the Class 3A coaches voted against a proposal which would split the classification into two divisions.
Coaches made the decision during a meeting Wednesday, but Boyd didn’t think a vote was going to take place. He said he thought the meeting would be informational and that the proposal had enough support to go forward and be voted on in March by the 3A principals and athletic directors.
Boyd said last week more than 70 percent of the coaches approved of the proposal when a straw poll was taken. A two-thirds majority was needed from the coaches for the proposal to proceed.
The proposal would split the class into two divisions based on school enrollment after the playoff teams were determined. Under the proposal, teams also would play 11 regular-season games, similar to what Class 4A schools have done.
“I was somewhat disappointed, because I really would like to have an eleventh game, because we desperately need the extra funds in our athletic departments,” Boyd said. “However I can live with the decision if that is what the body wants. I am good with that.”
Boyd said the biggest reason coaches voted against it was the belief it would water down winning a championship.
Boyd, one of the coaches who worked on the proposal, said there still is a chance of the proposal being brought up again at the March meeting in Charleston.
