Winthrop hands CCU its third straight loss

Andre Jones scored 15 points in Winthrop's 67-57 victory over Coastal Carolina on Saturday in the Big South Conference.

 

Jones, who hit three 3-pointers, helped the Eagles (11-16, 8-8) lead 39-28 at halftime. After intermission, they led by as many as 22 points, 59-37, on Gideon Gamble's jumper with 7:25 left.

 

It was the third straight loss for Coastal Carolina (17-8, 10-5) after a good start in Big South Conference play. Each team made 22 field goals, Winthrop taking 58 attempts to Coastal Carolina's 52. But Winthrop outshot Coastal Carolina from both the foul line and beyond the 3-point arc.

 

The Eagles hit 7 treys in 18 attempts, Coastal Carolina just 3 of 11. Winthrop was 16 for 20 at the stripe, the Chanticleers 10 for 18.

 

George Valentine scored 13 points for Winthrop, Matt Morgan 12. Sam McLaurin led Coastal Carolina with 12 points and Dexter Moore added 10.
