CONWAY, SC – Coastal Carolina head coach Joe Moglia announced Clayton Carlin as the Chanticleers’ next defensive coordinator on Wednesday.
Carlin comes to Coastal after two seasons at Bucknell. He was the team’s defensive coordinator in 2011 and coached the linebackers in 2010. Moglia said legendary Nebraska coach Tom Osborne contacted him about Carlin for the defensive coordinator job.
“Bucknell was a team that had struggled in the past,” Moglia said. “They brought in a new staff and a new defensive coordinator and they have been doing very well as of lately. He’s worked for Tom Osborne and people like that. We have done a lot of homework in terms of getting him and we think he’s a find.”
In his second year at Bucknell, the Bison defense ranked third in the NCAA in rush defense, allowing just 78.27 rushing yards per game, while leading the Patriot League and ranking 12th in total defense. Bucknell additionally ranked 15th nationally in scoring defense. His 2011 defense featured consensus All-American defensive back Bryce Robertson, who led the nation (FCS and FBS) with 13 interceptions. Thanks to Robertson, Bucknell led the nation in turnover margin, getting 22 interceptions and recovering 17 fumbles.
Moglia said there are two hires still needed to round out his staff; a wide receivers and linebackers coach.
