The BCS better check itself.
Alabama-LSU lived up to the hype — if you like stagnant offenses, special teams’ mishaps and conservative coaching.
I went into the game on-the-record (with buddies) saying a rematch of Alabama and LSU should happen if it turned into a close game. We got overtime.
But why am I singing a different tune now?
LSU and Alabama have similar size, speed and systems. And we saw zero touchdowns, five field goals and many more missed ones. I don’t want to see that again. I don’t want that to be my national championship.
Oklahoma State’s offense would be a new welcomed challenge for a stout SEC defense.
A matchup against Stanford’s Andrew Luck would be a good reward for Luck who turned down the professional ranks to live out a chance at a national title.
But if Oklahoma State and Stanford both lose — I still wouldn’t want to see a rematch.
In the fairness of college football, every team should get a shot with a resume of steady success.
I’m not saying that the University of Houston should clash with LSU in the national title game if it remains the only unbeaten team —but I’m starting to take Boise State’s side.
The Broncos have won, been in and came out victorious in BCS games in the past. Plus, the early season win over Georgia keeps looking better and better on paper. I know Boise State would be heavy underdogs — but every dog should have its day.
If big-time college football adopted the playoff system, this column wouldn’t need to be written.
“I would be honored to face that team again,” LSU coach Les Miles said after Saturday’s 9-6 victory over Alabama.
Gamesmanship — yes.
The politically correct thing to say — yes.
The smart thing – no.
I’m not sure LSU could beat Alabama again. But I’m not sure Alabama could beat LSU either.
The game could have gone either way – heck, if Alabama’s kicker could make a field goal it would be a completely different story. But Alabama’s players let a chance at the national title fall out of their grasp on their own field. Alabama was beaten in front of 100,000 of its own screaming fans.
I don’t want to hear the debate we’ll have after a Alabama BCS national championship game win. Can anyone say, “best-of-three?”
The SEC deserves more respect based on the results of the last decade of national championships. But I’m not ready to put four undefeated teams behind Alabama.
