Mullins cruises in opening round playoff at home

»  Comments | Post a Comment

In his first full season as the Mullins Auctioneers head coach, Brian Hennecy and company won their first home playoff game in more than five years.

Last season, after he was thrown to the forefront three games in, Hennecy coached the Auctioneers to eight wins in their final nine games. On Friday night, he has guided them to their first playoff win since 2005 with a 47-0 shutout of Academic Magnet.

"Give all of our assistant coaches credit. They had our team ready to play. We played a complete game," said the victorious Coach Hennecy after the game.

Sloppy conditions made for a sparse crowd a slippery football at the outset and Mullins fumbled on their first possession. However, the Raptors gave it right back as they went deep on their first play. The pass was picked off by Earnelle Legette and returned 33 yards to near midfield. That was Academic Magnet's only chance at the lead.

Rembert Timmons drug defenders 29 yards to the Raptors' 30 yardline and three plays later, Tracy Dewitt put it in from sixteen yards out at 7:07 of the first. It was 7-0 after Miguel Renteria's PAT kick.

Magnet took over after the kickoff, but for the second time they only had it one play. Dewitt slammed the ball carrier on first down and Keivonte Walters was there to pick it up. Then Dewitt took the first handoff and ran 15 yards, hurling in for the score to make it 14-0 just 24 seconds after the first score.

Into the second quarter, it was more of the same as Academic Magnet kept fumbling and Mullins kept scoring.

After another turnover, Justin Elliott guided the Aucs down the field to the 24-yard line. Here, Timmons did the rest, going in for the touchdown untouched to the right side.

Again, they followed up that score with another quickly. A three and out by the Raptors had them pinned deep on a punt. But, the kicker never got it away as Tyler Mason of Mullins came in for the block. The ball rolled into the end zone and Tyre Constant pounced on it like a hungry man on the last concession stand hot dog, for the score. The PAT made it 27-0 and still Hennecy's crew was not done before the half.

Magnet was held to fourth down when they got the ball back, and out of desperation they went for it. The Auctioneers, as they had done all night, snuffed out the Raptors ground game and stuffed the play, taking over possession.

Legette added a 5-yard touchdown right before halftime and a 34-0 advantage.

Mullins racked up two more scores in the clock running second from Johnson and and Shaquan Brown to make the 47-0 final.

The win assures the Auctioneers a winning season as they move to 6-5 and earns them a second round game at Woodland this coming Friday at 7:30.

The offense piled up 313 total yards, all on the ground as Mullins did not attempt a pass all night. The rushing was a balanced effort as Johnson had 61 yards and a score, Dewitt had 52 yards and two scores, Legette led in yardage with 72 yards and a touchdown and Timmons also had one score to go with his 56 yards.

Walters had one fumble recovery, one caused fumble, and 7 total tackles to lead the defensive effort!

While the support may have been slim Friday night, the effort level of players and coaches for Mullins wasn’t.
