MULLINS -- Another year has come and gone for Pee Dee Academy golf. While many will look at the record and think it did not measure up to the team's usual lofty standards, coach Jerry Coleman and his squad see things very differently.
"What I saw was a young team that improved greatly as the year went on," Coleman said. "At the start of the season, we were shooting in the 190's as a team. When the season finished, that average was down to around 176, 177."
What Coleman also points to is a team that is very youthful, sporting only one senior and every other player coming from middle school level to freshmen.
"We were very, very young," Coleman said. "We are looking very forward to next year and gaining strength and experience."
The most experienced member of the squad was senior, Bradley George. "Bradley was certainly our leader," Coleman said. "He was in his fourth year of varsity golf and was our medalist."
The next oldest players on the team were the “Fab Five Freshmen.” This group included Pat Smith, Hampton Tiller, Will Webster, Weston Dean and Adam Baker.
The lone eighth grader on the team was Walker Richardson while the only seventh grader was Drake Page.
The youngest on the team were the two sixth graders, Dakota Atkinson and Zachary Lane.
"Give this crew about two years," said an excited Coleman, who is looking forward to the future. "I cannot wait to see how they mature. If they keep playing and doing the right things, you will see some good stuff in the future for Pee Dee golf."
It’s going to take work to get to that level. "They need to try to get into some summer golf leagues first of all," suggested Coleman. "They need to continue to listen to the ones who are coaching them and trying to help them."
Will George helped with the young kids this year and they really listened well to him, Coleman said of his former player and assistant coach. "I also want to give a big thanks to Johnny Atkison and Freddie Barkley who let us use Dusty Hills for our matches year in and year out," he said.
Coleman went on to thank those who helped make the year another successful one on the links for the blue and gold.
"I want to thank Wayne George for helping to transport us to our away matches and everyone who participated in our fundraiser this year to help keep us going in the right direction, teaching these kids the right way to play."
The Golden Eagles finished the season with 21 victories, finishing sixth in the final region tournament held at the Crossings Country Club.
