MARION -- Midfielder Melanie McGrath of the Marion Lady Swamp Foxes soccer team is the first female player to earn a college scholarship after signing a letter of intent to play at Coker College in fall.
It was another “crowning” achievement for the reigning Miss Marion High and 2009 Miss Maroon & Gold.
McGrath is also the 2010 valedictorian for the school’s graduating class.
“Melanie's work ethic, determination, and winning attitude have enabled her to excel both on the soccer field as well as in everyday life,” Lady Swamp Foxes coach Stacye Drose said. “Her exemplary character and leadership skills have earned her recognition both on and off the field, which will take Melanie where ever she wants to go in life.”
McGrath’s held in regard by her coach. She is the kind of player every coach wants coach, she said of the player that earned a starting position as a freshman.
Spending the past two seasons at center midfielder, McGrath contributes both offensively and defensively.
McGrath is also a Palmetto Fellow scholarship recipient and has been on the Swamp Foxes cross country team for fiver years, earning the Captain's Award three consecutive years.
The All-Region soccer player said she looks forward to continuing her soccer career at Coker College and thanks coaches Michelle Krupke, Michael Steinbar and Drose for their support.
“She will definitely be an asset to the Coker College soccer team next season,” Drose said.
Marion High School midfielder Melanie McGrath academic achievements are matched with athletic honors, including being the first female soccer player to earn a college scholarship.
