CONWAY - The Hartsville varsity boys’ soccer team won its last game of the season 6-1 at Conway High School on May 4. Hartsville ended the year 8-8 overall and 3-7 in conference.
“End of the year records don't always tell the full story of how positive a season these kids had,” Coach Troy Alexander said.
Last season, the team was ranked 98th overall in the state. This year, the Foxes finished in the top 50 in the state.
Graduating from the team this year are senior starters Wes Regan and Hector Lucas as well as Damion Addison.
“We have a great core group of kids coming back next year and look forward to moving to a new conference next season,” Alexander said. “With nine potential starters coming back, we look to further improve on that next season.”
During the Conway game, the Red Foxes started out a little slow but turned up the pressure in the 20th minute with Hunter Truett scoring a goal assisted by Evan Vasseur. Then in the 35th minute, Caston Jeffords scored, assisted by Wil Atkinson.
Dalton Hall scored twice, in the 43rd minute assisted by Regan and then again in the 52nd minute assisted by Misael Lucas.
Regan added another score in the 62nd minute assisted by Wil Atkinson, then Jacob Newton scored in the 78th minute assisted by Zach Davis. Charay Blakney, Jamie Irick, and Hector Lucas all had excellent games.
"We really possessed the ball well for most of the game. When you can keep the ball you really limit the other teams opportunities,” Alexander said following the game. “I just hate we waited until the last game of the season to put in a result like last night."
