HARTSVILLE - The Hartsville varsity boys’ soccer team dropped their first home game of the season in a 2-0 decision against West Florence Tuesday. The Red Foxes’ loss moves them to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Hartsville did not match the intensity right from the start, and the Knights made them pay in the 4th and 45th minute on two defensive breakdowns. The only bright spots for Hartsville were Evan Vasseur and Kalob Berry.
West Florence kept the Hartsville defense on the move throughout the match, and the Red Foxes just couldn't seem to keep the ball long enough to string together any kind of chances.
Following the game, the Hartsville boys didn’t take their first home loss well.
“I would like to personally apologize to the West Florence side for our lack of sportsmanship after the game. That is something that Hartsville High School athletics is founded on, and the lack of respect for an opponent will not be tolerated,” Coach Troy Alexander said.
The Red Foxes hope to turn around their luck against South Florence at home in The Cage at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The varsity girls play before the boys at 6 p.m.
Hartsville will also celebrate Youth Night Friday. Children can get in free if they wear their jerseys and will get a chance to play in front of the crowd during the halftime of each game.
“We look forward to getting back on the winning track this Friday night,” Alexander said. “Both teams hope to set a good example being it is Youth Night.”
