COLUMBIA – The Hartsville boys’ varsity soccer team traveled to Columbia Saturday for a non-conference match against No. 9 Airport High School.
The entire match was a defensive battle with neither team holding much possession throughout the game and with no real scoring opportunities until the first overtime.
For the Red Foxes, Wil Atkinson, Charay Blakney, Hector Lucas, and Jacob Newton helped preserve the shutout.
The second overtime had two great opportunities, one for each team. First, Atkinson missed a header served by Wes Regan for Hartsville, and then, with less then 10 seconds on the clock, Kalob Berry made a huge diving save not only to prevent the goal but to keep the rebound opportunity from Airport since Berry held onto the ball.
In penalty kicks Regan, Hunter Truett, Evan Vasseur and Atkinson made their PKs to win 4-3 in the shootout, and 1-0 for the game.
The win improves the Red Foxes’ record to 2-1 this season.
The boys’ next match is Monday with JV at 5:30 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m. against Wilson High School at home in the Cage.
