HARTSVILLE - Last week, I discussed the approach shot. This week let's talk about the volley. The volley should be nothing more than a blocked shot. This means the volleyer should use the energy of the oncoming ball and not their own.
When you volley at the net, a continental grip is preferred. This allows you to have only one grip and not have to change back and forth. Also having a tight grip keeps the racket from twisting out of your hand on off center hits.
The first volley you hit on the transition into the net should be a deep volley behind your opponent, and the follow up volley should be hit a little closer in to try to put the ball away if you can.
Remember if the ball is dropping below the net, you must bend your knees and get eye level with the ball to hit it.
So remember no swinging on the volley! The less you do with the racket, the better your volley will be.
See you on the courts!
