HARTSVILLE - The Hartsville Red Foxes’ varsity baseball team got their region action off to a good start Tuesday as they played at home and outlasted Carolina Forest 6-3. The team improved to 4-0 overall under Coach Tony Gainey.
The win came even though the team managed to scrap together only three hits. Starting on the mound for the Foxes was David Leeth, who pitched as well as he needed to, giving up two runs on four hits in 3-2/3 innings of work. Cody Mincey picked up the save in relief.
Hartsville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning without a hit. A throwing error plated a Carolina Forest run in the second, and then the opponent loaded the bases, but Leeth struck out a batter to strand all three.
In the third, center fielder Brandon Beans started things off with a hot shot single “through the wickets” of the pitcher. As usual, the speedy Beans stole second, but he also swiped third as well. Catcher Seth Lowe scored Beans on a sacrifice fly, a run generated entirely by Beans’ speed. Adam Peterson then walked, stole second and scored on a smoked liner to left center by Will Lucas, making it 4-1. Carolina Forest opened with a lead-off triple in the top of the fourth inning off Leeth, a runner that would eventually score on a sacrifice fly and prompt a pitching change to Mincey with the score 4-2. Mincey would seal the door shut, only allowing one more run to cross, and Seth Lowe added another sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. The final was 6-3.
Hartsville plays again at West Florence at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
