HARTSVILLE - The Hartsville High varsity boys’ soccer team defeated Providence FC in front of a great crowd Tuesday night to improve their record to 1-1.

The Providence Panthers got on the board first with a goal on a cross in the 16th minute. Freshman Zach Davis got Hartsville in the scoring column for his first career goal in the 33rd minute.

The second half was dominated with great possession from the Hartsville side that was rewarded with a goal by Freshman Hunter Truett assisted by Evan Vasseur in the 78th minute.

Jacob Newton played a beautiful defensive game keeping their attack in check all night. Wes Regan and Jamie Irick battled in the midfield to keep the possession for most of the game.

“Providence FC worked very hard and never game up until the final whistle sounded,” Hartsville coach Troy Alexander said. “When you play a team like that, it is always dangerous to have a one-goal differential.”

Also Tuesday, the Hartsville varsity girls had an exciting back and forth match against Providence that ended regulation with a 0-0 game. Overtime ended with 0-0 score. Penalty kicks resulted in Hartsville coming out on top for a 1-0 win giving the Lady Red Foxes a 1-1 record on the season.

The Hartsville junior varsity team had a tough start Tuesday giving up four goals in the first half but holding Providence to no goals in the second half.

“The first half was extremely bad because we made huge mistakes that cost us dearly,” Hartsville coach Daniel Tentes said. “It was the first game they played together ever, and the first half demonstrated that.”

The final score was 4-0 Providence.

“We have a completely new JV team this year, only one player left from last year. Possibly we are the youngest team in the competition, which is a very good sign for the future,” Tentes said.

On Monday, the Hartsville High varsity boys’ soccer team lost a heartbreaker in their season opener at Lancaster High School.

Evan Vasseur scored in the 39th minute, and the Red Foxes went to the half 1-0. Lancaster scored on a set piece in the 61st minute. Jamie Irick scored our second goal of the night in the 77th minute.

The Red Fox defense was anchored by Jacob Newton, Charay Blakney and Wil Atkinson, but they could not hold the lead.

Lancaster tied the game in the 79th minute on a through ball. There was no score in overtime, but Hartsville did have several opportunities.

“It was an extremely physical game with several momentum swings throughout the match,” Alexander said. “Even when the game got a little chippy in the second half our boys kept their composure and did not retaliate, which I was proud to see.”

In the end, Hartsville lost in penalty kicks 4-2.

The teams travel to Airport High School in Columbia on Saturday starting with the varsity girls at 1:30 p.m. and the boys at 3 p.m. The next home matches will start at 5:30 p.m. Monday with the junior varsity team followed by the varsity boys.
