FLORENCE — The Florence RedWolves have signed Walters State sophomore pitcher Kyle Deese and Charleston Southern sophomore pitcher/utility man Patrick Dolan for the 2010 Coastal Plain League season.

Deese, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound right-hander, pitched for the RedWolves in 2009. He made 13 appearances, including one start, and posted a 3-2 record with one save and a 3.00 earned run average. In 36 innings, he gave up 20 hits, walked 20 and struck out 35.

This spring, Deese has made four appearances for Walters State and is 1-0 with a save. In six scoreless innings, he’s allowed four hits, walked two and struck out 10.

“We are very fortunate to have Kyle back for this summer. Having a proven arm of his caliber in this league will be a big help for us,” said RedWolves coach Russell Carter. “We feel like Kyle can do a number of things on mound from being in the rotation to possibly closing for us.
“He’s off to a great start for Walters State as their closer, and we look forward to having him on our staff.”

Dolan made seven appearances, including two starts, on the mound for the RedWolves in 2009 and was 0-1 with two saves. In 17 1/3 innings, the 6-2, 175-pound right-hander gave up 14 hits, walked 12 and struck out 22.

At the plate, Dolan batted .218 (12-for-55) with three doubles and five RBI.

In 10 games at Charleston Southern this spring, Dolan is batting .231 (9-for-39) with an RBI. In two appearances on the mound, he has a 20.25 ERA. He’s worked 2 2/3 innings, allowed five hits, two walks and struck out three.

In the spring of 2009, Dolan was third for Charleston Southern with a .309 (63-for-204) average. He was third on the team with 12 doubles, tied for first with two triples, was second with eight home runs and second with 35 RBI.

Patrick Dolan put very good numbers for Charleston Southern last year and will certainly be able to help us in a variety of ways,” Carter said. “His ability to pitch, hit and play the field really stretches our roster.
“He is a very good athlete capable of stealing a bag, scoring from first on a double and coming in to finish a game on the mound. His versatility will be a real plus for our ballclub.”

The RedWolves open the 2010 CPL schedule May 26 at 7 p.m. at home against the Fayetteville Swampdogs. Tickets can be purchased by calling 629-0700.
