COLUMBIA — Nakia Young’s basket with under 20 seconds negated a furious comeback by Marion and gave the Southside a 66-64 victory in the Class 2A girls state championship on Saturday at Colonial Life Arena.

The Swamp Foxes were without second-leading scorer and rebounder Candace Wright, who injured her knee in the lower state championship and could not play.

The Swamp Foxes battled back from an 11-point deficit in the second quarter and a nine-point deficit in the third quarter, but could not finish off the Tigers in the final minute of play.

Geneika Brantley had a monster game for Marion, scoring 24 points and registering 18 rebounds and five blocks. Amira Timmons followed with 16 points for the Swamp Foxes.

Young led Southside with 24 points followed by Esaliya Mosley with 16 and Chelsea Walker with 10.
