LAKE CITY — Lake City High School’s Corey Baker has been named to the Class 3A All State basketball team and the North-South All-Star Game, while DaShawn Butler has been named first team All-Region for Region 7-3A and Willis Flowers was selected for the third team.
After winning the Region 7-3A title and advancing to Saturday’s Class 3A lower state finals, Baker was named to the All State Team by the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association. He also was selected as co-player of the year for Region 7.
Baker, a senior forward, averaged 16 points per game along with 11 rebounds and two blocks.
Butler averaged 12 points, three rebounds and two steals per game. Flowers averaged five points and two steals per game.
Baker said he was surprised at the accolades he is receiving.
“I haven’t been thinking about any of this during the season,” he said. “I’ve just concentrated on trying to help my team win.”
Baker’s playing has been key factor in the Panthers’ success this year, according to head coach Willie Thomas.
“His hustle makes a big difference for us,” Thomas said. “Corey is a three-year starter, and I’ve seen a lot of growth in his point and rebound production. He gets a lot of offensive rebounds and can guard anyone from post players to guards.”
Baker said one of the strengths of his game is playing hard every minute he is on the court, which is an important part of Lake City’s fast-paced style of play.
“I don’t quit when I play,” he said. “We worked hard on our conditioning and stamina before the season, so I really don’t get tired during games.”
Thomas said college scouts notice Baker’s play even when they are at a game to scout another player.
“A college scout was at our game on Tuesday to scout a player from Battery Creek,” Thomas said. “The next day, I got a phone call from the scout asking about Corey.”
Baker will join other all-stars from across the state for the North-South All-Star game at North Myrtle Beach High School on March 20.
