GREENVILLE - Claire Brown, a rising sophomore at Hartsville High School, enjoyed a great start to her summer golf schedule as she participated in the USGA Junior Girls Amateur qualifier at Furman University on June 14. Brown’s score of 79 placed her 16th in a field of 68 players.

This one-day regional qualifier drew top female junior golfers from the Southeastern United States. The course was set up by the U.S. Golf Association (USGA) and played at over 6,100 yards. The top eight scorers advanced to the Junior Girls Amateur to be played at The Country Club of North Carolina in July.

Brown competed against more than 50 adult and junior female players at the Women’s South Carolina Golf Association State Championship Match Play at The Sanctuary in Beaufort June 22-25. She won the consolation championship.

Brown’s first day qualifying score placed her in the top 16 spots in the Championship Division.

The second day of competition began the match play pairings. Brown’s first opponent, Courtney Boe, a highly recruited high school senior from Hilton Head, will join Coastal Carolina University’s women’s golf team in the fall. Although only one over par after 15 holes, Brown was defeated 3 and 2.
This was an exciting match where Brown found herself 4 down after six holes. She fought back to one down after 11 holes. However, consecutive birdies by Boe on holes 13, 14, 15 and 16 proved to be too much. Boe would go on to finish the three-day tournament as runner up to former Furman standout Dawn Woodard.

With the loss, Brown was placed in the Consolation Bracket. Her next opponent, Anna Martin, was a rising sophomore and member of the lady’s golf team at the College of Charleston. Brown won the 18th hole to extend the match to extra holes. A birdie on the first playoff hole gave Brown the victory.

The momentum from the morning round carried over to an 8 and 7 victory in the afternoon over Jeannette Godwin from Pawley’s Island. In the final match, Brown defeated Wallace Hamerton of Hilton Head 3 and 2 to claim the Consolation Championship.
