MULLINS -- After an 11-5 victory over Aynor this past Thursday in Junior American Legion baseball action, Mullins Post 89 coach Donnie Hill said it was probably the best his team played so far, breaking even in six games.
“The problem we’ve had with the start of the season has been with our bats but it’s finally coming,’ Hill said. “We’re still learning, we got people from everywhere.”
Starting practices on May 10 and the season on May 24, Hill said his team consists of players from Lake View, Green Sea Floyds, Dillon and players from Pee Dee Academy and Mullins High School.
Coming off the heels of a win against Conway, Mullins rallied from a 4-2 score to defeat Aynor and follow up with a five-team tournament and four additional games.
With the coaching staff that features Michael Stone, Kevin Hamilton, Bobby Page and Will McMillan, Hill and company has been working hard to evaluate where players will be most productive.
J.T. Baxley helped get the squad on the board along with Holden Clark, while Kody Stevens provided the highlight, driving in two runs to take an 8-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Pitcher Sean Lewis came out the bullpen and stifled batters the three straight strikeouts in the top of the sixth inning.
Stevens followed up with an RBI single, followed by a run scored behind Taylor Langston, scoring off a wild pitch.
The Mullins Post 89 roster includes:
