COLUMBIA – Stephen Behr continues his strong play on the golf course.
A month after winning the Class 4A state championship, the rising senior at West Florence captured the South Carolina Golf Association Junior Championship at Fort Jackson Golf Club on Thursday.
Behr shot a 1-under 70 in the final round to finish with a 7-under 206 and win the tournament by three shots over Hayden Garrett.
“I’m carrying a lot of confidence,” Behr said. “It is a tournament I have wanted to win, and I’m glad my game was on.”
Behr shot a 68 in each of the first two rounds and had a two-shot lead over Garrett heading into the final round.
Behr said he played a little conservative in the final round, not wanting to give up the lead.
“I hit the ball really well and my mental game was really good, especially today,” he said. “I felt really mentally strong and had the lead the entire day.”
Behr won’t have much time to rest, as he will play in the Foot Joy AJGA Invitational at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro next week.
The winner of that tournament will earn a spot to play in the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship on Aug 19.
“It’s one of the toughest fields I will play in this year,” Behr said. “Hopefully, I will play well.”
