ADA, Mich. – Stephen Behr is off to a good start at the U.S. Junior Amateur.
The rising senior at West Florence shot a 5-under 67 on Monday and is in a three-way tie for first place after the first round at Egypt Country Club.
Behr is tied with defending champion Jordan Spieth and North Carolina native Davis Womble.
Behr had seven birdies and two bogeys. He finished with three birdies over his final four holes. Behr will begin his second round Tuesday at 1 p.m.
After Tuesday’s second day of stroke play, the top 64 will advance to match play, which will begin Wednesday.
Players will be seeded based on stroke play scores.
Gaynor qualifies
for S.C. Amateur
ANDERSON – Francis Marion golf coach Mark Gaynor shot a 1-under 71 and qualified for the South Carolina Golf Association Amateur tournament.
Gaynor’s 71 was good enough for sixth place. The Amateur will be held Aug. 5-8 at Columbia Country Club in Blythewood.
