BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Florence native and rising high school senior Luke Coates took medalist honors at the Carolinas Junior Championship Qualifier on Thursday at Keith Hills Golf Course at Campbell University.
Coates shot a 3-under 69. His victory earns him a spot in the Carolinas Junior Championship to be played at the Members Club at Woodcreek Farms in Elgin, N.C., July 27-29.
Coates’ win is the latest in a string of solid outings. In April, he won the South Carolina Independent Schools Association (SCISA) Class 2A championship. He also won the Optimist International Tournament at Arcadia Shores in Myrtle Beach, the South Carolina Junior Championship Qualifier at Wyboo, and the SCISA Region 4-2A tournament at Crossings Golf Course in Florence.
In June and July, Coates earned two top-five finishes, one at the Grant Bennett Junior Boys Invitational at Florence Country Club and the other at the Carolinas Junior PGA at Quail Creek at Coastal Carolina University.
