HARTSVILLE - The last two weeks, we discussed strategies and tactics in doubles. Today, I would like to discuss the singles strategy and tactics.

The most important thing for a singles player at all levels to remember is to try to keep the ball deep. This means keeping the ball past the T line.

When you rally with your opponent, try to keep your outside strokes (where the ball travels away from you) back crosscourt. When the ball travels into you, then you need to change the direction of the ball. By doing this you are hitting the ball in the right spot in every situation.

Don't look at the opposite court when you play because the court never moves, and players are always trying to spot the open court instead of playing the percentages.

Keep the ball deep and crosscourt until you get the inside ball. Then pull the ball down the line.

Good luck, and see you on the courts! The Wendy’s Adult Tennis Open will be Feb 5-7 at the Hartsville Country Club. Go online to sctennis.com to sign up. Deadline is Tuesday.
