The Lake City High School boys’ basketball team will face Socastee tonight and host Georgetown on Friday after getting its first two region wins against Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach this past week.
Cold shooting and a scrappy Myrtle Beach Seahawks team kept the Panthers (13-1, 2-0) out of rhythm for most of the night in the first game of region play and brought the Lake City squad to a near standstill on Jan. 12.
A late surge keyed by two clutch three-point shots from senior Willis Flowers, however, pushed Lake City to a key 61-59 region notch. Dashawn Butler paced the Panthers with 16 points, while Corey Baker added 15 and Domanic Wilson scored 11.
The Panthers overcame poor shooting again Friday night, but found its shooting touch in overtime to knock off North Myrtle Beach 51-45.
It looked as if Lake City would have no problems with the Chiefs when the Panthers held a 13-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, but North Myrtle Beach put together a solid second period and held Lake City in check to close the gap to six at the half.
The Chiefs were able to find a rhythm in the second half, while the Panthers’ shooting woes returned.
North Myrtle Beach outscored the Panthers 18-9 in the final period to force overtime. Lake City trailed 37-38 with 1:37 left in the fourth when Baker blocked a Chiefs shot and Flowers nailed a two-pointer to give the Panthers a 39-38 lead. North Myrtle Beach tied the game at 39-39 by hitting one of two free throws.
With 1:10 remaining in the game, Lake City allowed the clock to run down to 11 seconds before calling a timeout. When play resumed, the Panthers were unable to get a good look at the basket, and time expired with the score tied.
Lake City’s shooters warmed up in the extra period, when they scored seven points in the first two minutes and held on for the win. Baker led the Panthers with 11 points, and Martin Cooper added 10.
