The undefeated Lake City Panthers will return to action Tuesday, when they will face Lee Central after ringing in the new year by winning the Pepsi Carolina Classic.
The Lake City Panthers won 55-46 over the Mullins Auctioneers in the championship game of the Pepsi Carolina Classic in Florence on Dec. 31. Lake City also won the tournament in 2005.
Three Lake City players — Corey Baker, Domanic Wilson and DaShawn Butler — were named to the all-tournament team. Baker was also named the tournament’s most valuable player.
The Panthers took advantage of poor shooting by Mullins early, jumping out to a 15-4 lead at the end of the first period and extending the lead to 32-13 at the half.
Despite shooting only 2-for-16 from the free throw line, Lake City led by as many as 20 points in the third quarter, but Mullins’ offense heated up in the final period. The Auctioneers cut the lead to eight points in the fourth quarter, but that is as close as Mullins was able to get.
Baker led Lake City with 14 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Butler and Wilson added 10 points each.
Lake City made it to the championship game after a 72-57 win over Hartsville followed by a 49-34 win over Marlboro County.
Butler scored 18 points for Lake City against Hartsville, while Baker scored 15 and Wilson chipped in 11. Martin Cooper led Lake City scorers with 11 points against Marlboro County, while Baker, Wilson and De’Charles Burgess scored seven each.
The Panthers, 10-0 on the season, will travel to Bishopville to face Lee Central on Tuesday and to St. Matthews to take on Calhoun County on Jan. 9.
