HARTSVILLE - Hartsville High School congratulated five football players who have signed letters of intent to play college ball with family and friends on Wednesday. Wednesday was National Signing Day, the first day high school football players can officially sign with the college of their choice.
Coach Jeff Calabrese said this was the largest number since he has been head coach and probably the most since the early 1990s.
“I think it’s a testament to their hard work and their parents,” Calabrese said.
Lineman Tevin Blair signed with Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn. Blair racked up 27 tackles and one sack this season.
Third generation tight end Will Lucas signed with Virginia Military Institute. Lucas also made eight receptions for 121 yards and two touchdowns and had five tackles this season. He was selected to play at the 73rd Annual Shrine Bowl and earned All-Region honors this year.
Dre Scott, Shawn Smith and Victor Venson signed to play at Dean College in Franklin, Mass.
Running back Scott, named the team’s top offensive player, set the school's all-time leading rusher for a career. He rushed for a total of 1,581 yards and averaged 9.2 yards per play this season. Scott scored 19 touchdowns, 17 rushing and two passing. He received 11 passes for 239 yards as well. He also earned All-Region honors this year.
Quarterback Smith completed 59 of 99 passes this season for 1,137 yards and 11 touchdowns with only four interceptions. He also rushed for 331 yards, with an average of 5.1 yards per carry, and seven touchdowns.
Wide receiver and defensive back Venson had a total of 97 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumbler this season. He also blocked one punt.
