FLORENCE – The Hartsville varsity boys’ soccer team could not break the plane of the goal Friday in a 3-0 loss to region rival West Florence in Florence. The loss drops the Red Foxes to 2-5 in conference with three games left to play in the regular season.
During the first half, possession was fairly even until one minute to the half when the Knights scored. The second half picked up where both teams left off with neither team gaining an inch.
West had several chances late with two shots hitting the posts, but the Red Foxes held them off until the last eight minutes when the Knights scored two goals.
“When you are down a goal late like we were, you have to do things you normally would like to stay away from. You have to start pushing people forward to try and create some opportunities, and we got caught in some bad situations, and like any good team does they made us pay,” Coach Troy Alexander said.
Freshman Zach Davis and juniors Charay Blakney and Jacob Newton took a hold of the Foxes’ defensive scheme and are playing well. Wes Regan in the midfield had the best offensive opportunities of the night but couldn't get anything to break the plane of the goal.
“Coach Andrews has schooled his kids well. His kids know when to step on the throttle and really push forward,” Alexander said. “They have tons of speed all over the field, which really challenged us defensively.”
Both the girls’ and boys’ varsity teams hold senior night festivities Friday at The Cage in conjunction with their last home games of the regular season against Sumter at 6 and 7:30 p.m.
