While the Carolina Panthers were blowing it against the Cowboys on the NFL's Monday Night Football, the Carolina Forest Panthers were all smiles for the high school version. Chris Nwanegno kicked a 26 yard field goal with under a minute to go to give the Panthers a 10-7 win over Socastee.
The game was played on Monday because of Friday's rain storm, and because it was homecoming for Socastee.
Carolina Forest opened the scoring in the first quarter when Robert Gray found Marlon Horton for a 15 yard touchdown strike. Horton had started the season as the quarterback, but has since moved to an all-purpose player on offense and defense. Gray would throw an interception in the end zone later in the first, and Carolina Forest would not see the red zone again until their final drive. The Panthers started that drive with four and a half minutes left in the fourth quarter from their own 42 yard line when the Braves had a turnover on downs. Gray meticulously brought the Panthers down the field, but on third and two from the 6, the Panthers had a three yard loss, which set the stage for Nwanegno's heroics.
Socastee recorded their touchdown in the second quarter with a P.J. Brave touchdown run. They seemed to take the lead in the third quarter when Zack Elliman completed a touchdown pass that was nullified by a penalty. The touchdown seemed to cap a nearly nine minute drive to start the third quarter. Instead, the Braves would miss a field goal - one of two misses on the night.
Socastee drops to 2-3 on the year, and will play North Myrtle Beach on Friday. Carolina Forest improves to 2-4 and will take some time to enjoy this win - they off Friday.
