Liberty blanks FMU women

LYNCHBURG, Va.Silvia Betancourt scored two goals to lead Liberty to a 4-0 non-conference victory over Francis Marion on Thursday in women’s soccer action.
FMU falls to 1-8-1 and suffers its third straight shutout defeat. The Patriots return to action on Friday with a 7 p.m. match at Winthrop University.
Liberty (2-6-0) outshot the Patriots 21-9 and held a slight 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman Rebeccah Hoekstra returned to the FMU lineup after missing several weeks with an injury. She recorded five of the Patriots’ shots, four of which were on goal. Ashley Van Laethem had Francis Marion's other shot-on-goal.
Senior goalkeeper Emily Brandenburg recorded seven saves for Francis Marion, while Liberty keeper Karen Blocker made five stops.
Maria Owen gave Liberty a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal at the 7:51 mark. Laura Nyholt made it 2-0 with a score in the 21st minute. Betancourt scored her goals in the 34th and 80th minutes.
