DUE WEST — Coker’s Daniel Shirzad’s goal in the match’s 75th minute proved to be the game-winner as the Cobras defeated Erskine 3-2 on Saturday in Conference Carolinas men’s soccer action.
The hard-fought match went back and forth all afternoon. Coker (7-0) struck first at 23:18 on a goal by Eric Steifeld who pounced on a loose ball mishandled by Erskine goalie Taylor Kern.
Erskine’s Tyrell Dyson responded at 36:45 when he took a pass from Matt Robinson and hit a slow roller past Coker goalie James Sweeney.
Coker went up 2-1 at 55:30 on Tyler Senecal’s direct kick that was mishandled by Devon Braykovich. The Fleet responded 15 minutes later on Alex Connelly’s shot from the top of the box after the ball
had bounced off the goal on Cade Weatherly’s shot attempt.
The game-winner came at 74:27 when Shirzad avoided a Fleet defender at the top of the box and hit a left-foot bomb past Braykovich.
Coker out-shot Erskine 12-6. The game was plagued with 10 yellow cards being assessed.

Erskine routs Coker
DUE WEST — Freshman Molly Harpe scored two first-half goals and assisted on another to lead Erskine to a 7-0 win over Conference Carolinas foe Coker.
Harpe’s goals were Erskine’s first of the season after the Fleet had dropped their opening four games on the road to shutouts.
Harpe’s three goals and two assists are the most points scored by an Erskine playerunder coach Gary Winchester. Erskine’s seven goals are the most scored by the Fleet in Winchester’s three seasons.
Erskine improves to 1-4 and 1-1 in Conference Carolinas while Coker falls to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
VOLLEYBALL
Coker drops two
HARTSVILLE — The Coker volleyball team lost a pair of matches on Saturday. Belmont Abbey defeated the Cobras 3-2, after Coker battled back from a 0-2 deficit to start the match. Brevard won 3-1 after another come-from-behind 0-2 deficit.
The losses drop the Cobras to 1-13 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
In the Belmont Abbey match, the Crusaders won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-20, but the Cobras stormed back to win the next two 25-20 and 25-23. A late run by the Crusaders in the final set gave
them a 15-11 win.
Brevard won the first two sets of the second match 25-16 and 25-12. Coker again bounced back with a win in the third set, 25-18, but lost the fourth set 25-13.
Leading Coker in the Abbey match was Cynallyhia Indriago with 10 kills and 17 digs for a double-double, while Kristin Teets also recorded a double-double behind 12 kills and 14 digs. April Griggs netted
double-digit kills with 10 and Abby Frame and Molly Bookhart dished out 23 and 18 assists respectively. Samantha Bryant also added 17 digs.
Teets, Indriago and Griggs each had five kills to pace the Cobras in the second match, with Teets also grabbing 12 digs. Frame had 19 assists and 13 digs.
