First and Goal: Marion to honor legendary coach

»  Comments | Post a Comment

This week there will be plenty of road games for local teams.

Pee Dee Academy travels to face Laurence Manning after a tough game at Dillon Christian. The Golden Eagles loss by a score of 18-6 but pretty much held their own against a high-octane Warrior offense. Kevin Driggers continues to make plays for the squad and should have another highlight play this Friday.

Creek Bridge was stunned a bit in a 38-30 overtime loss to Aynor. However, the game showcased a number of big plays and provided a glimpse of how explosive the Warriors can be.
Juwuan McClellan is turning out to be a burner at wide receiver, while running back Timothy Grant remains consistent at linebacker. Offensive lineman and team captain Devonte Shannon provides leadership to an improved front line.

Creek Bridge will hit the road to face Hannah-Pamplico in what should be another high scoring affair.

Mullins will travel to face Carvers Bay in an early season test. Defensively, I have liked what I saw from the Aucs, starting with defensive line. Junior Avery Grant has really impressed on both sides of the football. I saw him level a kid during a touchdown run from JimDonovan Reaves.

Reaves has really improved, showing off game-breaking speed along with the dynamic George Page. Add Sequan Washington to the mix and the running game is looking pretty good. The Aucs lose a very talented and hard working senior in Keyan Rogers, who suffered a knee injury during an exhibition game but it was awesome to see the player rooting for his squad. Senior Justin Legette made his return from a knee injury the prior season and will be a great addition running the football and making plays at linebacker and safety.

Back to the defense, Kendel Nance and his blocked punt play was the highlight to start the game as Mullins took advantage for their first scoring drive. The junior is massive and an imposing figure on the roster. Look for Nance to be an impact player as the season continues. Sophomore linebacker Antonio Anderson and Cey’Quan Ritter are the enforcers on defense. The two “hitmen” bring speed and sure tackling to the unit.

After taking a week off, the Marion Swamp Foxes return for the game of the week against bitter rival Manning. To add icing to the cake, Marion will be celebrating the career and legacy of former coach Bob Rankin and invite all former players to represent the program.

It should be a great night of football as the legendary Rankin returns to Fox Field. It should be a “throwback” game as the Foxes remain similar to the glory days that featured a tough aggressive defense and punishing running game. This year’s squad most certainly has that rushing attack with Brian Gilliard, Justin Gause, Lue Clemmons and Jeremy Curry carrying the football.
