First and Goal: Region play heats up while youth football has a dream team

Not only are area prep football teams providing highlights with game action, but recreation football programs are giving fans something to cheer about also.

The past few weeks I’ve been enjoying my visits to Watsonia Park in Marion watching recreation football teams in action. In fact, I've been pleased with all of the football I’m watching, including my San Francisco 49ers early 3-0 lead in the NFC West division.

This past week I saw full back Tracy Dewitt show off some stunning speed, breaking for an 80-yard touchdown in a junior varsity game between Mullins and Cheraw.
Friday night, I witnessed the Swamp Foxes win big against Loris 24-7.

Its no secret Marion has explosive talent on offense. Wide receiver Devonte Gilbert dazzled with a highlight 54-yard pass play and running back Justin Gause’s 89-yard touchdown reception was a big deal. However, the player that got my attention during the game was senior linebacker Carroll Norman. A strong tackler with experience, Norman provided that physical dominance that wore down the

Lions runners. After Loris scored off a run heavy drive, Norman deliver two brutal tackles in the second half that helped keep the Lions out of the endzone for the remaining two quarters. Sophomore

Marquise Johnson was just as mean on special teams and is one of the top defenders in the area already.

Marion travels for a battle against Aynor to continue it’s current four-game win streak.

Creek Bridge is off this week and will host Green Sea Floyds on Oct. 16.

After a tough game in Cheraw, Mullins will enjoy a second half run of three straight home games, starting with region foe Dillon coming to town Friday.
Now back to recreation football at Watsonia.

Turner Games, a team of eight to ten year olds is 2-0 on the season and is a pretty good young team from Marion.

Emerson Hunt, Dan Barker along with coach Bennie and coach Brunson coach the squad.

Turner Games has a solid crew of players and Darius Hunt is one player I’d want on my team. Hunt is a tough runner with the football and a linebacker in the mold of a young Ray Lewis the way he attacks the football. Quarterback Brent Herlong along with James Stanley and Calvin Mullins Jr. also provide plenty of big plays for the team.

The Mullins Cowboys may be the most exciting team in the area. After posting 33 points in their first game of the season, the team scored 40 points last week in a victory in Marion.

Wide receiver Bernard Jones scored multiple touchdowns along with quarterback-slash-wide receiver Fabian Carroll. The team also features a strong running back in Derrick Drawhorn. Dominique Prichard is another speedster on a squad loaded with weapons offensively and a massive front line defensively.

The amazing thing is the 11 and 12-year-old squad operates out the shotgun formation to attack on offense. Players such as Jacquan Mullins, Jemel Davis, Corey Mullins, Sherman Smith, Markel Williams, Nakeem Grice and Olivar Ramierez can make plays on both sides of the ball.

Football fans will be entertained watching these kids in action.
