FLORENCE — Josh Council made his final start against Wilson a memorable one.
The Camden senior quarterback threw for 237 yards and five touchdowns and also ran for another score as the Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 45-29 on Thursday at Memorial Stadium.
It was Camden’s first win over the Tigers since 2005 when the Bulldogs won 24-20.
“I never had a night like this,” Council said. “It was a big win for us. The offensive line played great and our receivers caught a lot of balls.”
Council also used his feet to hurt the Tigers, rushing for 79 yards, and was able to escape the Tigers’ pass rush for his biggest play of the game.
On a third-and-17 at his own 30, Council scrambled around in the pocket, avoiding two Tiger players before he stepped up in the pocket and found Jerrod Beaufort for a 70-yard pass to put the Bulldogs (5-1, 2-0) up 24-13 just before halftime.
“It was real big,” Council said of the play. “They were coming on a blitz and I saw my man wide open so I just had to throw it to him.”
“Josh made plays when he had to, especially in crucial situations,” Wilson coach Darryl Page said. “We knew how good he was coming in. It’s just a testament of his athletic ability and things they do.”
When Council was hurting Wilson, The Tigers hurt themselves with plenty of mistakes.
Wilson (4-2, 1-1) was penalized 14 times for 100 yards. Two of the penalties nullified two long kickoff returns.
The Tigers also had two bad snaps on punts and an interception, which lead to 17 Camden points.
“The penalty situation definitely hurt us tonight but we are going to look at the film and see what we can correct and go from there,” Page said.
Wilson quarterback Maleik McCall went 9-of-19 209 yards with a TD and interception in the loss.
Adray Montgomery led Wilson on the ground with 77 yards and two touchdowns.
Montgomery’s second touchdown pulled the Tigers to within 31-21 with 7:13 left in the third quarter.
But Camden answered as Council hit Tim Dinkins on a 29-yard touchdown pass. Dinkins finished with two catches, both touchdowns, for 55 yards.
SaVonn Wingate led Camden on the ground with 114 yards as the Bulldogs finished with 425 total yards.
Wilson is at Crestwood next week, while Camden plays Marlboro County.
