Scott brings shot, range to Falcons

DARLINGTON — Whenever Darlington basketball coach Ken Howle had to come up with a game plan to stop Hartsville, keeping Jordan Scott from taking over a game was always one of his top concerns.

This year, he’s glad that burden falls on someone else.

With his transfer from the Red Foxes, Scott gives the Falcons perhaps the purest outside shooter in the Pee Dee. Scott has made more than 50 percent of his 3-point shots throughout his career, and
that proficiency helped him earn a Division-I scholarship to the College of Charleston.

It has also earned him the Morning News Preseason Player of the Year award as well.

Scott averaged just over 18 points and four rebounds a game last year for Hartsville. He’s averaged nearly 20 points per game per season during his high school career, and expects the trend to continue
with the Falcons.

“I’m happy to be at Darlington,” Scott said. “This is where my dad played and I wanted the experience of playing here my senior year.

“I hope to really work at becoming an all-around player and help lead Darlington to a state championship.”

Scott has taken over games before, scoring 30-plus points on numerous occasions. His accuracy from the perimeter is a big part of what makes him one of the most dangerous players in the Pee Dee,
Howle said.

“He’s the best pure shooter I think we’ve had in a while,” he said. “He can hit from any range, long or medium, and once he gets hot, he’s hard to contain.”

The shooting guard still needs to work on his defense, Howle said, and on making sure he helps the team in other ways, too.

“I’d like to see him get to the free throw line more often,” Howle said. “He’s a very good free throw shooter, and I’d like to see him take the ball to the basket more often.”

Already something Scott had in mind, he said.

“I just have to make good decisions with the basketball, and drive to the hole and shoot or pass it off to one of the big men when the chance is there,” Scott said.

With the transition, one of the biggest concerns is just getting Scott acclimated to the new system and his new teammates.

“It’s getting better,” Scott said of the transition. “We’re working on building chemistry and just getting a feel for each other out there. But it’s coming together. I don’t have any doubts that we’ll be ready to
go when we have to be.”
“We’re still sort of on the honeymoon right now,” Howle added. ‘He’s getting used to us and we’re getting used to him.
“But I know what a great player he is and what he’s capable of. I think the rest will come with time.”
