NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Francis Marion squandered a 14-point second-half lead and then committed six turnovers in overtime as the Patriots dropped their first game of the season 72-67 to The Apprentice School, on Tuesday in non-conference men’s basketball action.
Guards Kaylan Anderson and Herman Mains led the Patriots (5-1) with 14 and 10 points respectively. FMU played without the services of leading scorer and rebounder Robert Faulkner.
Isaih Harrison paced The Apprentice School (4-0) with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Andre Henderson scored 17 points. The Builders outrebounded FMU 47-29.
FMU led by 10 points at intermission 31-21. The Patriots would go up by 14 points (45-31) on a three-pointer by Kendrick Robinson with 13:52 left in the game. The Apprentice School rallied with a 27-8 run to forge ahead 58-53 with 3:49 left in regulation.
Mains tied the score at 60-60 and forced overtime with a rare four-point play with 35 seconds left. Robinson had a chance to win the game in regulation, but missed a jumper with two ticks remaining.
Altogether the Patriots committed 32 turnovers, while The Apprentice School turned the ball over 37 times.
FMU will host Allen on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Smith University Center.
