The Lake City Panthers ended their most successful season since 1994 at Marlboro County on Friday with a 26-21 loss to the undefeated Bulldogs.
The Panthers ended the season 11-2 after the Bulldogs rallied late in the fourth quarter at McAlpine Stadium in Bennettsville to advance to the 3A lower state championship game.
Marlboro County took advantage of a Lake City turnover deep in Panther territory to take an early 6-0 lead in a game that saw six lead changes. Lake City responded early in the second quarter when Shon Carson scored from two yards out to give Lake City a 7-6 lead.
The Bulldogs gained a 12-7 advantage in the second quarter, but Kendall McClam made a 13-yard score to take the lead again 14-12 just before the half. Each team added another touchdown, with Lake City scoring on a 33-yard run by Sheldon Robinson.
Leading 21-18 in the fourth quarter, the Panthers “Blue D” defense forced a Bulldog fumble. Lake City recovered at its own four-yard line. After getting the ball to their own 15 for a first down, however, Lake City turned the ball over on an interception. The Bulldogs took the lead and the win on a five-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion.
Carson led the Panthers’ ground attack with 110 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries as well as an additional 38 yards on one pass reception. Robinson added 48 yards rushing and one touchdown on six carries.
