The Lake City High School varsity football team will face an unbeaten Marlboro County tonight, one week after the Panthers gave the Airport Eagles their first loss of the year.
Lake City rumbled for 443 yards on the ground and got two huge fourth down defensive stops to topple Eagles 33-22 in the second round of the 3A lower state playoffs last week.
Airport took the opening kickoff and drove down to the Lake City 22 yard line, but the “Blue D” defense held the Eagles and gave its offense the ball when Airport’s pass for a first down fell incomplete.
The Panthers got on the scoreboard first following a three-and-out by Airport. Lake City then put together a nine-play, 55-yard drive that ended with a four-yard touchdown run by quarterback DaShawn Butler to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead.
Shon Carson extended Lake City’s lead to 14-0 when he reached the end zone on a four-yard run to cap a 71-yard drive in 12 plays.
Airport closed the gap to 14-7 on a 14-yard scoring pass with 24 seconds left in the half.
Lake City took the kickoff to start the second half, and on the third play, Carson broke through the middle of the defensive line for a 79-yard scoring run. Airport closed the gap again in the third period on a touchdown run from five yards out, but Carson and The Panthers answered with 4:39 left in the third on a nine-yard touchdown carry.
Airport then drove the ball all the way down to Lake City’s two-yard line. On second down from the two, the Blue D knocked down an Airport running back for a five-yard loss and gave their offense the ball once again after two incomplete passes into the end zone.
Trying to run time off the clock, the Panthers then mounted a 93-yard scoring drive. Running back Kevin Brand broke free for a 42-yard run on second down from the Panthers’ 19-yard line. Running back Antwon Wallace capped the drive 10 plays later with a 12-yard touchdown run.
Carson finished the game with 275 yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries. Sheldon Robinson added 63 yards on seven rushes and Butler chipped in for 51 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.
